Welcome. You're in exactly the right place.
Never used AI before? Wonderful — that's who this page is for. We'll go slow, skip every bit of jargon, and the only thing you'll do today is type one sentence. That's it. Take a breath; you've got this.
So, what even is it?
You know how you type a question into Google and get a page of links? AI is a bit like that — except you ask in plain, everyday words, and instead of links, you get a written answer back. You can ask it to explain something, tidy up an email, suggest ideas, or just chat. You talk; it talks back. Honestly, that's the heart of it.
Lots of people call it “chatty” (you might know it as ChatGPT). There's nothing to install and nothing to learn first. If you can send a text message, you already have every skill you need.
Say hello to it
Open one of these (both are free, and a quick sign-up is all it takes), then type something you'd normally Google — or just say “hello, what can you help me with?” See what comes back. There's no wrong thing to say.
Both are made by friendly, well-known companies (ChatGPT by OpenAI, Claude by Anthropic). Either is a lovely place to start.
You honestly can't break anything
This is the part everyone worries about, so let's settle it now. There's no wrong button. You won't break the computer, and you won't break the AI. If an answer isn't useful, you just ask again in different words — like carrying on a chat. Nobody's watching, nobody's judging, and there's no clock. Poke around as much as you like.
- It sometimes gets things wrong. And it can sound very sure while doing it. So treat it like a helpful, chatty friend who occasionally misremembers — lovely for ideas and first drafts, but worth double-checking anything that really matters.
- It's an agent, not a boss. It never decides anything for you. You ask, it suggests, and you choose what to do with it. You stay in charge the whole time.
- The more you say, the better it helps. A few extra words about what you actually want makes a world of difference. Don't worry about getting this “right” yet — it's a gentle habit, and we'll grow it together.
A tiny memory nudge
Here's one of our little quizzes — the kind that pops back just before you'd forget. Have a guess, then peek at the answer. It only saves in your own browser, so it's entirely between you and this page.
If the AI gives you an answer that seems off, what's the simplest thing to do?
Just ask again in different words — it's a conversation, not a one-shot test. And for anything that really matters, give the answer a quick double-check yourself.
If you're wondering who the big names are
You don't need to memorise any of this — pick one above and you're sorted. But if you're curious, here are the ones you'll hear about most. They all do much the same thing.
- ChatGPT — the one most people have heard of. A friendly all-rounder, with a free version. A great first hello.
- Claude — tends to be thoughtful and careful, and is lovely for longer pieces of writing. Also free to try.
- Gemini — made by Google, and handy if you already live in Gmail and Google Docs.
- Copilot — made by Microsoft, and built into Windows and Office if that's where you spend your day.
That's the whole first step. Had a little play? Whenever you're ready — no rush at all — there's a gentle next bit waiting.
